Investment Banking

How would you help a multinational realize its strategy?

When clients come to us with their financial strategies, they do so because they know that we'll make it happen. Whether it's a case of merging with another company, completing an IPO or raising money through the debt markets, we do the deals that continue to transform the corporate landscape.

So it's no wonder that 90% of Fortune 1000 companies and over half of all FTSE 250 companies are clients of ours. In the first half of 2008, J.P. Morgan advised on seven of the top fifteen deals announced globally, six in the US, four in Europe and five in Asia Pacific (Dealogic). In fact, with some $451 billion worth of transactions, we captured a 24% share of the global M&A market (Dealogic). As well as being one of the world's most trusted advisors in M&A, we're also recognized as market leader in Corporate Banking, Debt and Equity.

What does it mean to be an J.P. Morgan investment banker?

Our Investment bankers are the first point of contact for most clients, who include corporations, governments, private firms, financial institutions, non-profit organizations, entrepreneurs and wealthy individuals. Our professionals take the long view of each client's needs and assess the best ways for them to execute their strategy.

J.P. Morgan is ranked as the best overall investment bank, according to a survey of 350 CEOs, CFOs and other senior corporate leaders conducted by Institutional Investor magazine (2007). More…

Often, members of the deal team interact on a daily basis with the client's CEO and CFO, providing advice on the entire spectrum of J.P. Morgan products. That means offering the right solution at the right time, always putting the client's needs first.

So why is our business model such a success? In short, it's about teamwork allied with individual talent. Our close-knit Investment Banking teams are made up of experts in their respective fields. Every step needs to be meticulously planned and perfectly executed. Neither are those transactions uniform. Our industry moves fast. Adaptability and a willingness to keep learning are two qualities we look for. The responsibilities come early, the rewards are fantastic and the work itself never ceases to captivate. There will always be new deals to pioneer.

Each account is led by a Client Executive, who will be a particularly experienced and respected member of our Investment Banking team. He or she liaises daily with the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of an individual client. Deal teams are small, vertically integrated and dedicated to finding solutions and identifying opportunities. The Client Executives work to define the specific needs of their individual clients, and then, by drawing on the expertise of our different teams, deliver the correct solution.

Industry and product groups

Depending upon your experience, interest and qualifications, you will typically join us as either an Associate or Analyst in an industry group, an advisory product group or in a capital markets product group. Whichever team you join us in you can expect exposure to senior clients and major deals from very early in your career. That's a promise, but it's also a word of caution; not everybody's ready for that kind of responsibility.
