Investment Banking

We'll keep your desk just the way you leave it. Our summer internships often lead to full-time offers.

Our Investment Banking summer internship program sets you up for a successful full-time career. In ten weeks as a Summer Analyst, you will have an extraordinary opportunity to see what investment banking at JPMorgan is really all about. We hire most of our full-time Analysts from the pool of Summer Analysts, so you may very well find yourself returning to school with a full-time offer in your pocket.

As a key member of the team, you are expected to make a personal impact right from the start. After orientation, you will get on-the-job training and networking opportunities throughout the summer, while working on the biggest deals in investment banking and handling real responsibilities during your internship.

About Investment Banking

JPMorgan helps the world's most prominent companies solve problems and seize opportunities, by raising capital or shaping corporate strategy and structure. Investment Bankers are the first point of contact for most clients, who include multinational corporations, non-profit organizations, governments, financial institutions, private equity firms, and institutional investors. Our professionals take the long view of each client's needs and assess the best ways for them to execute their strategy. Often, members of the deal team interact on a daily basis with the client's CEO and CFO, providing advice on the entire spectrum of JPMorgan products. That means offering the right solution at the right time, always putting the client's needs first.

Our Investment Banking groups are organized to provide either product or industry expertise to our clients. These teams collaborate to provide a variety of products to clients in each industry. The team members become experts in their product or industry. Deal teams are small, vertically integrated, and dedicated to finding solutions and identifying opportunities.

The magnitude of an Analyst's job

As a member of a team, you will have day-to-day contact with senior professionals, clients and the firm's Capital Markets teams. You will gain exposure to other groups through networking and group learning activities.

You will join us in one of these three areas: Industry Groups, Capital Markets or Advisory Products. Read more about them in our Investment Banking business area description. Whichever team you join us in you can expect exposure to senior clients and major deals from very early in your career. No job is more important that that of an Analyst. Our client solutions and advice are drawn from the data you analyze, and their success relies entirely on the integrity of the underlying analysis. That's why we ask much more of you than simply running numbers; we expect you to read the numbers, to understand the story they tell, to identify trends and patterns - and to speak up if you see a better way. You need to be able to deconstruct and reconstruct the numbers, and understand how they all fit together. You are the team's lynchpin.

Responsibility from the start

As an Investment Banking Summer Analyst, your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing financial valuation, discounted cash flow and multiples-based analyses
  • Building and using financial models
  • Preparing presentation materials and participating in deal pitches
  • Conducting industry and product research
  • Executing client transactions from start to closing

Help is here

You will receive the training and tools you need to succeed. We assign mentors to every student who is offered a summer internship; and if you join us, you will also have a 'point of contact' card with the names, contact information and even photos of your team members, who will be available to answer your questions and address your concerns. Consider them your JPMorgan summer family.

Training and development

World-class, hands-on training will be provided - both during orientation and throughout your internship. The summer internship starts with a four-day orientation program. Investment Banking Summer Analysts get a crash course in Investment Banking, micro- and macroeconomics, global markets and industries, and that's just for starters. You will leave with the ability to tear apart financial statements, evaluate companies, and assess management. These abilities will stay with you forever, inside and outside the Investment Bank. You will also create a deep professional network with other Summer Analysts and more senior colleagues. You will work hard and learn a lot, and it will be worth it.

Over the course of the summer, you will meet distinguished JPMorgan leaders who will talk quite candidly about their experiences on Wall Street. This summer’s speakers range from the co-CEOs of the JPMorgan Investment Bank to the Vice Chairman. They will share with you the lessons they've learned and the ways their careers evolved throughout their time at JPMorgan.

What we look for

The work is fast-paced, demanding and intellectually stimulating. We look for candidates with excellent quantitative, analytical and communication skills. You must have the ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines, and have the aptitude to synthesize large amounts of information and to develop innovative solutions. You should also be adaptable, able to manage projects independently, and be ready to assume a high level of responsibility as a member of a team. A well-rounded academic background with coursework in finance or economics is recommended. Candidates must demonstrate academic strength (minimum GPA of 3.0), strong teamwork, communication skills, and a high energy level.

An aptitude for numbers is a must, even if you're a liberal arts major. If you don't have a strong financial or business background, be sure you can tell your story; be able to demonstrate your quantitative aptitude both scholastically and practically (former jobs, for example) and be ready to articulate how your background will enhance your career at JPMorgan (you'll find more tips in our advice center under not a business major). Our summer internship programs are for rising seniors. Plus, we have a special Honors Program for rising sophomores and juniors.
