Investment Management
We partner with our clients to understand their unique needs - it's the core of what we do.
Invest your time and energy into our summer internship training program - we promise it will be worth your while. Our Investment Management ten-week summer internship program is a great way to explore the world of Investment Management and start a challenging and rewarding career. We hire most of our full-time Analysts from the pool of Summer Analysts, so you just might head back to campus with an offer in hand.
About Investment Management
Our Investment Management business is one of the largest of its kind anywhere in the world, with teams working on a broad range of asset classes, from equity and fixed income, to hedge funds and private equity, real estate, and other alternative strategies. We provide expert advice and innovative solutions to institutional and retail investors such as pension funds, governments, and insurance companies around the world. Our professionals take the long-term view in best assessing clients' needs and providing expert advice to clients, researching investments and managing portfolios in Fixed Income, Equity, Asset Allocation Services, Real Estate, Private Equity, Currency, and Hedge Funds.
Broadly speaking, our Investment Management business involves two sides: the client and alpha sides. Professionals on the client side deal with clients directly throughout the day and are responsible for bringing in new business, servicing current clients, explaining strategy and products to clients, and managing the relationships. The alpha side refers to portfolio managers who directly trade the securities in the accounts. They monitor the accounts daily and ensure that they are meeting their investment goals and guidelines.
The magnitude of an Analyst's job
Expect to work hard, but to also have fun. During the ten-week summer program, you will get to see for yourself how the business strategy, structure and values of Investment Management work. A speaker forum of senior managers and seasoned analysts will provide further exposure in these areas and will guide you through an in-depth study of the financial services industry as a whole, as well as the intricacies of Investment Management. You will also get a chance to work on a project with peers that includes a group presentation at the end of the summer.
You will make a valuable contribution to your team. Depending on which team you work on, your day-to-day activities will vary, but rest assured - you will never get bored. Read more about the various roles in our Investment Management business area.
Responsibility from the start
As an Investment Management Summer Analyst, your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following, depending on your role:
- Helping to perform financial analysis, preparing client communications materials, assisting portfolio managers in developing trade flow, and reviewing comparisons of account positions
- Assisting in providing our clients with comprehensive analysis and views on a variety of industry sectors
- Learning how to build innovative and targeted models alongside our investment teams, and how to provide the metrics that result in stronger security selection, portfolio construction, risk management, and investment performance
- Supporting client advisors and sales specialists in helping position our products and services in innovative and attractive ways for prospective and existing clients
Training and development
As a Summer Analyst, you will start the program with three days of orientation and training designed to lay the groundwork for a successful internship and start to your career. You will be introduced to our strategy, products and business groups.
Throughout the summer, top-notch, hands-on training from senior professionals and outstanding colleagues will be at your fingertips. You will also participate in a performance management process where you will set and monitor goals with your manager. Plus, a variety of networking events will introduce you to other lines of business within JPMorgan.
Then, once a week, you will take part in sessions organized by current Analysts that offer tips in the workplace and educate you on the various analyst roles across Asset Management. You will also have the opportunity to go to weekly meetings: Tuesday Talks & Tips that provide a forum to learn about analyst roles and Markets Drills, an opportunity to discuss and ask questions about the latest happenings in the financial markets. You will begin to understand the outlook of our Asset Management businesses - why we think the way we do and how current market conditions contribute to that. In addition, each Summer Analyst will have a mentor to help them get acquainted with JPMorgan.
Over the course of the summer, you will meet distinguished JPMorgan leaders and seasoned Analysts who will talk quite candidly about their experiences as part of the speakers series and networking events. They will share with you the lessons they've learned and the ways their careers evolved throughout their time at JPMorgan. See photos from summer events in our media zone.
What we look for
A real passion for the financial markets for starters. Investment Management is intellectually stimulating, fast-paced and demanding. With that in mind, time-management and multi-tasking skills are essential. We look for people who have strong quantitative and technical abilities, as well as exceptional interpersonal skills. Excellent analytical, communication, and teamwork skills are also important. And, a minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.
If you don't have a strong financial or business background, be sure you can tell your story: be able to demonstrate your quantitative and qualitative aptitude both scholastically (SATs, coursework) and practically (former jobs, for example) and be ready to articulate how your background will enhance your career at JPMorgan (you can find tips in our advice center under not a business major).
