The magnitude of an Analyst's job
As an Analyst in Investment Management, you will spend three years developing your skills as a member of a world-class investment team. You will gain a broad knowledge of a wide array of financial products while developing an extensive understanding of a particular asset class or client segment. Expect to work harder than you ever have before, and get ready to experience rewarding results.
Depending on your role, you might work with a research analyst to perform financial and valuation analysis, build complex models to assess investment performance, prepare presentations for existing and prospective clients, or research the competitive landscape. Whatever the assignment, you will make a valuable contribution to a team that provides world-class investment services. Read more about the various roles in our Investment Management business area.
Responsibility from the start
On a day-to-day basis, your activities will depend on the specific role you decide to pursue. It’s all up to you.
- Investment Analyst: You'll work with the industry's foremost experts on the analysis and execution of investment strategies. Expect to perform financial analysis, prepare client communications materials, assist portfolio managers in developing trade flow, and review comparisons of account positions.
- Research Analyst: Working with buy-side analysts, you'll provide our clients with comprehensive analysis and views on a variety of industry sectors.
- Quantitative Analyst: You'll build innovative and targeted models alongside our investment teams. You'll provide the metrics that result in stronger security selection, portfolio construction, risk management, and investment performance.
- Client/Marketing Analyst: As a Client/Marketing Analyst, you'll work with client advisors and sales specialists to position our products and services in innovative and attractive ways for prospective and existing clients. Preparing client presentations, performing competitive analysis and compiling responses to client inquiries are also part of the role.
Training and development
The initial five-week training course will immerse you in the business strategy, structure and values of Investment Management. Senior managers and renowned business school professors will guide you through an in-depth study of the financial services industry as a whole and Investment Management in greater detail. A senior manager will sponsor your class and help with your long-term development. Plus, you will also have a senior mentor, a more experienced Investment Management executive, who will guide you toward development opportunities that suit your long-term career interests.
If your performance is consistently strong, you may assume increasing responsibilities during your three years and pursue longer-term career opportunities within Investment Management. Many Analysts who complete the program go on to business school or pursue other positions, inside and outside of J.P. Morgan.
What we look for
A real passion for the financial markets is at the top of our list. Investment Management is intellectually stimulating, fast-paced and client-oriented. With that in mind, time-management and multi-tasking skills are essential. We look for people who have strong quantitative and technical abilities, as well as exceptional interpersonal skills. Excellent analytical, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills are also important. And, a minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.
We recruit students from many backgrounds - but an aptitude for numbers is a must. If you don't have a strong financial or business background, be sure you can tell your story; be able to demonstrate your quantitative aptitude both scholastically (SATs, coursework) and practically (former jobs, for example) and be ready to articulate how your background will enhance your career at J.P. Morgan (you'll find out more tips in our Advice Center under not a business major).
