Places to eat and shop for groceries

Who cooks? New Yorkers use their ovens as extra storage. Within fifteen minutes of moving into your new apartment, expect to see a dozen take-out menus slipped under your door. Try out your neighborhood restaurants. The menus are posted outside (or check out menupages.com to see the options in advance), so you'll know what to expect. And if they're busy, they're probably pretty good.

For delivery, check out delivery.com and seamlessweb.com which allows you to search restaurants specific to your neighborhood and place orders online. This is especially great if you are unsure what's open or how to find the kind of food you're looking for.

Pick up a Zagat's guide at any newsstand or bookstore, or subscribe online. Zagat's ratings are based on customer reviews, and include price, décor and service.

Go to citysearch.com for the "Best of…" listings that will lead you to the city's favorite restaurants of the moment, as well as the hottest bars and clubs. It has reviews and ratings from other New Yorkers who depend on this service for easy, online access to all sorts of information on New York life.

Two or three times a year New Yorkers and visitors get to eat at the best restaurants for less than the normal freight. It's called Restaurant Week.

If you do cook, New York is for you, too. There are Farmers Markets all over town. Union Square has one of the largest on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. There are also famous food markets such as Zabar's, Chelsea Market, Fairway, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Jefferson Market, Citarella, Dean & DeLuca and Balducci's. Grand Central Terminal has a food market that's well worth a visit. For an exotic flair, there are specialty grocers throughout the city catering to international tastes - the shops and sidewalk vendors in Chinatown are particularly enticing and affordable.
