Transportation within the city

As most New Yorkers acknowledge, subways are the fastest and cheapest way to get around town. The single fare is $2 a ride, regardless of distance, but daily, weekly and monthly passes are also available for unlimited rides. Transfers to other subways and buses are free. Visit the MTA site for more information, and be sure to pick up a map the next time you're in a subway station - they're free.

If you're going to New Jersey - Hoboken, Jersey City - the PATH is the way to go. It's not part of New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority, but the PATH toll machines now accept MTA MetroCards. Single fares are $1.50 a ride.

HopStop will help you figure out how to get where you're going. An invaluable tool for newcomers or Manhattanites venturing outside their borough, HopStop will give you the best bus and subway directions for the day and time you're traveling.

There are also ferries to and from Manhattan. And everyone should take the Circle Line cruise at least once.

Here's another insider tip: At J.P. Morgan, you can buy public transportation passes for commuting pre-tax. (That is, the amount you buy will be deducted from your pre-tax income!)
