As the remnants of Hurricane Lorenzo passed through the region the day before, Sept. 29th proved to be a perfect day for the 3rd Annual Race for H2O, an event sponsored by J.P. Morgan that benefits clean water and other environmental efforts in Valle de Bravo, a picturesque region outside of Mexico City (http://www.tourdelh2o.com/ ).

The Investment Bank and  Private Bank sponsored this race which drew 1,200 participants, including more than 40 employees and their family members in races of various distances from 150 meters for very young children to 10 kilometers for adults. Proceeds from the event support Pro-Cuenca Valle de Bravo, a not-for-profit group that has successfully implemented projects since 1999 to protect the region’s natural resources, by working with the local agricultural community, government and residents (http://www.procuenca.org/).

Aside from the sponsorship, J.P. Morgan also provided funds to support employee entry fees.  Pro-Cuenca de Valle de Bravo’s activities improve the environment, and enhances the lives of the poorer communities in the region.  Ongoing projects include building water filtration plants and irrigation areas, purchasing 102 slow burning stoves to slow consumption of local firewood supplies, developing family vegetable gardens and continuing a joint program with the government to monitor changes in the local environmental conditions.

In addition to supporting an important cause, the firm benefited from the branding and client-building opportunities.  “It felt great to support this cause in a community that so many of us love,” said Eduardo Cepeda, J.P. Morgan’s senior country officer for Mexico.  “The J.P. Morgan brand was prominently displayed on banners and tee-shirts and many of our clients took part, giving the firm the opportunity to further cement our relationship with them.”
